Update: Enhanced security coming to Blue e: Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) required beginning November 9, 2026
On September 9, 2026, a provider notice was published announcing that Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) will be required for Blue e beginning November 9, 2026. As we get closer to the implementation date, we will post additional details on Blue e “What’s New.” If you need technical assistance during this process, eSolutions HelpDesk will be available to provide support beginning November 9.
At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC), protecting the security of provider information and member data remains a top priority. As part of our ongoing commitment to enhance account security, we are introducing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for providers accessing the Blue e Provider Portal.
What is changing?
Currently, providers use a two-factor authentication process that sends a verification code to their email address during login. Beginning November 9, 2026, providers will be required to set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to continue accessing Blue e.
MFA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring users to verify their identity through a secure authentication method in addition to their username and password. This enhanced security measure helps protect accounts and sensitive information from unauthorized access.
What providers need to do
Starting November 9, providers should be prepared to complete the MFA setup process when prompted. MFA will be required for future sign-ins to the Blue e Provider Portal. They can select one or more of the several secure verification methods, including:
- Authenticator app: Receive a code via a smartphone app like Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator.
- Text message (SMS) verification: Receive a text message that includes a security code.
- Voice call verification: Receive an automated phone call from Blue Cross NC that includes a security code.
- Email verification: Receive an email message that includes a security code.
We encourage providers to review the login information and become familiar with the upcoming changes before the implementation date.
Benefits of MFA
- Enhanced protection for provider accounts
- Improved security of provider, members and business information
- Reduced risk of unauthorized access and fraud
- Stronger alignment with industry security standards
