Thinking about enrolling in BlueHPN?
This plan could be a smart choice if you:
- Want lower costs.
- Prioritize quality and affordability over a broad network of providers.
- Want higher-quality care that's better coordinated.
- Don't mind switching if your current doctor isn't in the BlueHPN network.
- Are located within areas covered by BlueHPN (including dependents).
A different plan may be a better fit if you:
- Often travel to areas where BlueHPN isn't available and need routine care while there that can't be addressed by telehealth from your regular doctor at home.
- Are located outside of a BlueHPN service area for most of the year (or have a covered dependent who is).
- Have a preferred doctor or specialist who is not in the BlueHPN network, and you're not willing to switch to a different provider who's in-network.
- Want a broad network of providers and are willing to pay a higher premium for that access.
How to find in-network care
Access care in the member portal
To see which of your doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies participate in BlueHPN, use our Find Care tool in the Blue Cross NC member portal. You can search by location, specialty, procedure, and more.
The member portal puts your health in your hands by offering tools to manage your plan, make health care decisions, and get the most out of your BlueHPN benefits on your computer or mobile device.2 With this portal, you can:
- See your deductible, claims, and benefits in an instant.
- Access your member ID card.
- Find doctors and reviews.
- Learn about healthy eating, prescription costs, and more.
- Take advantage of additional services your employer may offer.
5 tips for getting the most out of your plan
1) Use in-network providers
Remember to stay in-network. For treatment to be covered under your plan, you must receive care from a BlueHPN provider.
There are two exceptions:
- Emergency care services are covered regardless of whether or not the provider is in-network.
- Urgent care services are covered when you see a BlueHPN provider. When you are outside of a BlueHPN service area, out-of-network urgent care services are also covered.
Specific providers can be found on the member portal.
2) Know your options when traveling
Away from home but need medical care? You have options.
Use the Find Care tool within the member portal to see if BlueHPN providers are available in your location.
Telehealth or virtual visits with your primary care physician (PCP) may also be an option.
Not in a BlueHPN service area? Urgent care is covered, as is emergency care.
3) Manage costs
We have resources available to help you manage and understand the costs of your health care. The member portal can help you compare prices on hundreds of services, procedures, and prescription drugs covered by your plan.
- Search and compare the cost of specific treatments like back or knee surgery.
- Search and compare prescription drug prices.
- Discover nearby options that may offer a better value.
- See a breakdown of what you might pay versus what your plan might pay.
4) Take advantage of no-cost preventive care
Preventive care is routine health care that includes screenings, checkups, and counseling to help prevent illness, disease, or other health problems. It also covers well-baby visits and immunizations that can keep your family healthy.
Many preventive care services from in-network doctors are covered at 100% with no out-of-pocket costs to you as part of your health plan.3 Visit our preventive care page to review covered services and when you should get them.
5) Reach out if you need help
You can always talk to your benefits administrator if you have questions about your benefits or coverage. We also offer several ways to get in touch or find answers.
- Secure email in the member portal: The secure and private inbox in the member portal is a great way to connect with customer service to ask questions about your plan.
- Call us: For questions about your plan, bills, or claims, call the customer service number on the back of your Blue Cross NC member ID card.
- Review your benefit booklet: Avoid costs you weren't expecting by checking what's covered and educating yourself before you go to the doctor. You can access it anytime on the member portal.
