Blue Medicare Rx

2008 Enhanced Plan details

The service area for these plans is North Carolina. You must live in North Carolina to join these plans.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina offers two Blue Medicare Rx Plans. We are required to offer one plan that meets minimum standards requirements outlined by Medicare. Our plan that meets these minimum requirements is called Blue Medicare Rx Plan - Standard (Standard).

Medicare permits us to offer a more comprehensive plan in addition to the required standard plan. So, BCBSNC offers a second plan with enhanced benefits, called Blue Medicare Rx Enhanced Plan (Enhanced Plan). The Enhanced Plan from BCBSNC offers the following benefits:

$10 and $30 copayments for most drugs

With our Blue Medicare Rx Enhanced Plan (Enhanced Plan) you’ll pay convenient $10 copayments for most generic drugs and $30 copayments for most brand name drugs. That can add up to substantial long-term savings! And it’s convenient too. There’s virtually no paperwork. We will handle your prescription drug claims.

No deductible

Unlike Medicare’s Standard Plan, you don’t have to pay a deductible with our Plus Plan. That means you can begin taking advantage of your prescription drug benefit right away. Whether you purchase generic, brand name or specialty drugs, you’ll see the benefit of your coverage from your first prescription drug purchase.

No "coverage gap" for generic drugs

Some Blue Medicare Rx Plan coverage includes a "coverage gap," the period when coverage is suspended between the time you reach $2,510 in total drug costs and the time you reach your maximum out-of-pocket limit. With our Plus Plan, there is no "coverage gap" for most generic prescriptions. You’ll pay convenient $10 copayments for generic prescription drugs all the way up to your out-of-pocket limit of $4,050.

A broad range of covered drugs

The Blue Medicare Rx list of covered drugs includes a wide range of generic, brand name and specialty drugs including many of the most popular prescription drugs used by seniors. Please refer to our drug list to see if your drug is covered. You can also print out the drug list and take it to your doctor to discuss whether generic alternatives are available for your prescriptions.

A large and accessible pharmacy network

A large network of pharmacies is at your fingertips. In fact, 97 percent of the pharmacies in North Carolina are in our network, and we meet or exceed Medicare access requirements in North Carolina. You can also order drugs through our mail-order drug program.

Coverage when you are traveling

When you are out-of-state, you may visit chain pharmacies listed on the pharmacy directory and your prescription will be covered at the in-network cost.

1 BCBSNC is a prescription drug plan sponsor with a Medicare contract. Prescription drug coverage is not sold as a benefit of any Medicare supplement plan.

This tool provides useful information to help you review plans based on your current drug needs. The drug costs displayed are estimates and may vary based on the specific quantity, strength and/or dosage of the medication, the order in which you purchase your prescriptions, and the pharmacy you use. But it also is important to look beyond your current needs at the insurance value of Blue Medicare Rx coverage. Enrolling now gives you peace of mind because the coverage will be there even if your drug needs become more significant in the future. And any time you spend out-of-pocket more than $4,050 in a year, Medicare will pay almost all of your remaining drug costs.
