Since "opening our doors" in November 2000, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation has awarded in excess of $30 million through more than 200 grants and special initiatives. Although we are considered young by many standards, we believe our overall support and impact in communities exceed our years of existence.
Our mission is quite simple: to improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians. This mission is realized through the programs and services we fund as either grants or through supporting initiatives that address specific needs identified by the BCBSNC Foundation.
Recently, we completed a thorough evaluation of our funding focus areas and grant-making strategies. As a result, we have strengthened our overall approach to giving in an effort to better serve the people of North Carolina.
BCBSNC Foundation funding priorities are guided by three primary focus areas that are designed to proactively support organizations, programs and services capable of attaining long-term measurable results and sustained community impact.
These areas include:
In addition to our grant programs, we have led the development of several award-winning Signature Programs. Among these, we support Be Active KidsSM, a nationally recognized program that teaches preschool children about nutrition and physical activity; and we developed the Healthy Community Institute for Nonprofit Excellence, a unique two-day intensive training session designed to strengthen the organizational capacity of nonprofit organizations in North Carolina.
Since our inception, the BCBSNC Foundation's corpus has grown significantly from an original $15 million, enabling us to seek new and strategic approaches to addressing many of the state's community health needs.
