In 2007, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) joined with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, the majority of Blue Plans, the North Carolina Medical Society and other state medical societies across the country to settle a national class action lawsuit known as the Love, et al. v. Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, et al., formerly Thomas, et al. v. Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, et al. (Thomas/Love).
The settlement resolved a series of issues between the Blue Plans and physicians concerning claims processing and physician contracts. BCBSNC has taken a collaborative and constructive approach to meeting the Thomas/Love Agreement obligations and improving interactions with physicians and physician practices.
While BCBSNC's obligations to comply with the Thomas/Love Settlement Agreement ended after May 31, 2011, we intend to keep a majority of our business practice initiatives in place. In addition, we remain committed to continuing productive dialogue with physicians, physician practices and the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS).
