Claims for anesthesia must be filed with nationally recognized code set
To ensure consistent claims processing, effective July 2004, BCBSNC will no longer accept claims for anesthesia services filed with a surgical CPT code and applicable anesthesia modifier. These claims, whether submitted on paper or electronically, must be filed with the appropriate nationally recognized code set for anesthesia services.
This change is consistent with HIPPA provisions, which require all payers, providers and clearinghouses to use specified standard code sets.
Certain modifiers for timed anesthesia will still be accepted, but are subject to change as nationally recognized code sets change.
