BCBSNC Ends Kidney Disease Program

For the past three years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina "BCBSNC" has offered our members a disease management program for chronic kidney disease, including end-stage renal disease. The Member Health Partnerships – Kidney Disease program is administered for BCBSNC by Renaissance Health Care, Inc.

During the program's three years, we have collected data to evaluate the value of the program to our members. The data show that our provider networks offer our members outstanding care. Key lab values and efficacy measures for members on dialysis met or exceeded national benchmarks.

Because the standard of care for our members with chronic kidney disease is so high, our program offers little added value to these members. Based on this finding, we are no longer offering a chronic kidney disease program for our members as of May 31, 2007.

Please note this decision does NOT impact State Health Plan members. The State Health Plan will continue to provide its members with a kidney disease management program, also known as the North Carolina HealthSmart Kidney Disease Program.

We currently have approximately 100 members in our Member Health Partnerships – Kidney Disease program, and we will be contacting them by letter explaining our decision. Those members with acute care needs will continue to be supported through BCBSNC case management. We also will continue to identify members with common co-morbidites of chronic kidney disease and engage them through Member Health Partnerships.

If you have questions about the termination of the Member Health Partnerships – Kidney Disease program, please contact your BCBSNC network management representative.
