Changes to Topical Retinoids Age Criteria

Based on additional clinical review, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) is making the following changes to the age criteria for topical retinoids effective May 15, 2012. 

  • Adapalene products (e.g., Differin, Epiduo): The age restriction will be removed.
  • Tazarotene (e.g., Tazorac):  The age will be moved up to 35. 
  • Tretinoin products (e.g., Retin-A, Tretin-X, Avita, Retin-A Micro/Pump, Veltin, Ziana, Tretinoin bulk powder):  The age will be moved up to 35.

Please note that members will continue to be required to try a generic version of each topical retinoid before a brand-name version will be covered.  More information about our prior review process for prescription drugs, including downloadable fax forms, is available for your convenience online.
