BCBSNC Monitors Meningitis Outbreak

Release Date: October 15, 2012

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) and public health officials continue to respond to the multi-state meningitis outbreak related to potentially contaminated steroid medication.  Our Care and Pharmacy Management teams are following this issue closely and have identified the practices in North Carolina who have administered these products.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an official advisory, which contains the latest information about this outbreak.  Additional details about their coordinated multi-state investigation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of the fungal meningitis outbreak among patients who received epidural steroid injections and suffered strokes believed to have resulted from these infections can be found on the CDC’s website.

Although the identified North Carolina providers are working with the North Carolina Health Department to contact impacted patients, we all need to be on the alert for any patient who contacts BCBSNC or your office who may not have been identified by the CDC process.

If you have any questions, please contact the Provider Blue LineSMat 1.800.214.4844.
