What is RealMed?

RealMed is a healthcare technology company that has partnered with BCBSNC to provide internet-based technology to physician offices. This technology facilitates diverse, multi-payer claims management capability, ranging from making paper claims electronic to making electronic claims transfer to BCBSNC for real-time processing.

The RealMed product integrates with the practice management system in the physician office to provide a number of features:

• Eligibility, either as a single inquiry or as a batch generated from the appointment scheduling system, can be queried in real-time to BCBSNC.
• Claims can then be generated that incorporate accurate eligibility information direct from the payer.
• Electronic claims can be directly imported to RealMed from the practice management system for submission to BCBSNC.
• Paper claims can be turned into an electronic file for editing, validation, and submission via the Internet.
• As a result, claims submitted through RealMed experience fewer failures for member identification and eligibility issues than do claims that submit through other processes.
• Certain claims can be sent for real-time processing through RealMed to BCBSNC while others transmit as regular EDI claims.
• Claim status inquiries can be made to BCBSNC through RealMed.

Physicians pay a monthly enterprise fee to RealMed for claims submission. This fee covers charges for eligibility and claims submission to multiple payers. Generally, the savings in claims preparation and submission costs, in addition to efficiencies caused by complete and correct claim filing, justify the additional expense incurred by physicians in using RealMed.
