How it works

Like simplicity? Then you'll love Blue Options. With this plan, taking advantage of your benefits is easy.

When you need to see a doctor, you can go to your Primary Care Physician (PCP) or directly to a specialist. (You do not need to get a referral to see a specialist unless you are seeking inpatient or intensive outpatient mental health or substance abuse service.)

Just follow these simple steps:

In-network providers:

  1. Call to schedule an appointment.
  2. Present your BCBSNC ID card at the PCP or specialist's office.
  3. Pay only a copayment for your care.
  4. There are no claims to file.

Out-of-network providers:

  1. You can make an appointment with a PCP or specialist outside the network.
  2. Receive out-of-network benefits, which means you pay a higher amount for service. Some benefits are only available in-network.
  3. You may have to file your own claim forms.

Emergency coverage
You're always covered in case of an emergency - no matter where you are. Please seek care from the closest emergency room. You don't need to contact us first.

Receiving care outside of NC
As a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina member, you'll be covered across the country and in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide1 through BlueCard®. And there's nothing additional to sign up for - the BlueCard program is an automatic benefit of BCBSNC membership.

Primary reasons for primary care
Did you know that most practices limit the number of patients they see? That's why we recommend that you select a Primary Care Provider (PCP) before you get sick. That way, you won't have to worry about finding a doctor when you really need one. In addition, your PCP:

  • Provides your routine health care
  • Saves you time and unnecessary copayments by recommending appropriate specialists
  • Is your first source for information
  • Helps you make decisions about your care
  • Communicates with other physicians treating you
  • Documents your care and keeps your records in one place
  • Charges only one copayment for care
