History & Facts

 We were the first Blue Cross plan to provide dependent benefits, and in 1933 we covered the delivery of the first "Blue Cross" baby.Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) is a leader in delivering innovative health care products, services and information to more than 3.7 million members, including approximately 900,000 served on behalf of other Blue Plans. The company offers its members discounts and information on a wide variety of health-related services at no additional cost. BCBSNC also offers life, dental and disability insurance products. For 76 years, the company has served its customers by offering access to quality health care at a competitive price and has served the people of North Carolina through support of community organizations, programs and events that promote good health.

BCBSNC celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2008.

1933: Hospital Care Association founded
First "Blue Cross" baby born at Durham's Watts Hospital
1934: Hospital Saving Association founded
1968: Hospital Care and Hospital Saving associations consolidate as North Carolina Blue Cross and Blue Shield
1973: Company's distinctive headquarters building opens in Chapel Hill.
Company changes its name to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.
1979: First electronic claim submitted to BCBSNC.
1998: Customer Service Center opens in Durham
2001: BCBSNC purchases PARTNERS National Health Plans of North Carolina, Inc.; establishes major operations center in Winston-Salem.
2005: BCBSNC North Carolina workforce tops 4,000.
2007: Membership tops 3.5 million.
