Cosmetic Dentistry Blue is BCBSNC's discount program for cosmetic dental procedures. Through this program, eligible BCBSNC members can receive a discount on cosmetic dental procedures at participating Cosmetic Dentistry Blue network providers across North Carolina. Cosmetic dentistry is a field of dental practice that focuses mainly on the enhancement or beautification of the teeth. It includes a variety of procedures such as teeth whitening, dental implants, dental bonding, veneers, tooth contouring and tooth reshaping.

The discounts became effective beginning January 26, 2006. You will not be reimbursed the discount for any procedures prior to that date.

After you have researched your procedure and are ready to move forward, follow these simple steps:

1. Select a participating provider by visiting the Cosmetic Dentistry Blue provider search or by calling 1-877-269-1097.
2. Call the provider and make an appointment.
3. Present your BCBSNC ID card at the time of your appointment.
4. Pay the provider's usual published fees, less the provider’s program discount. No claims are filed, so you're responsible for the entire discounted cost.

No, the discount does not apply to services covered under your BCBSNC health or dental plan, and no services accessed through the program are considered covered benefits of your BCBSNC insurance plan. Therefore, the cost of these services does not count toward your plan deductible or coinsurance maximum and you are responsible for paying all fees incurred for cosmetic dental services.

The first step is to carefully research the procedure you are considering. The next step in the process is to select a Cosmetic Dentistry Blue network provider and to set an initial consultation. This first consultation is an ideal setting to discuss any questions you may have with your provider. Additionally, the discount will apply to this consultation, even if you ultimately do not have the procedure.

Cosmetic Dentistry Blue is designed to discount cosmetic dental services that are not typically covered by insurance. Examples of these types of services include teeth whitening, dental implants, dental bonding, veneers, tooth contouring and tooth reshaping. Members will receive a discount up of at least 10% on the provider's regular fees for these services, including the consultation, procedure, necessary products and follow-up. No, you do not need a referral.

In order to participate, Cosmetic Dentistry Blue network providers must have the following qualifications:

• Must be in an active practice in dentistry for at least two years, or practice with a mentor/partner who is credentialed in cosmetic dental services by American WholeHealth Network.
• Must have a nationally recognized certification in cosmetic/aesthetic dentistry by:
  • American Society for Dental Aesthetics
  • American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry
  • In the absence of national certification, practitioners will be accepted to provide limited cosmetic dentistry services upon documentation of:
    • Membership and/or continuing education meetings verifying that the provider is working towards accreditation with the American Academy of cosmetic dentistry or membership with the American Society for Dental Aesthetics; and
    • Completion of continuing educational courses relevant to the specific cosmetic dentistry method or service being provided.

No. There are no Cosmetic Dentistry Blue providers outside North Carolina at this time although, we intend to expand the network out-of-state in the future.
