N. King Prather
Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
N. King Prather is senior vice president and general counsel of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. In addition to his duties managing the Law Office at BCBSNC, which includes his role as corporate secretary, Mr. Prather oversees the company's Compliance and Ethics department, the Audit and Risk Management function, and the Health Policy Office. He also serves as the secretary of the separate and independent BCBSNC Foundation, a private not-for-profit foundation.
Outside of BCBSNC, Mr. Prather is the chairman of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association. Mr. Prather is the chairman of the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees and serves on the North Carolina Central University School of Law Board of Visitors. He has participated on the Town of Cary's Athletics Advisory Council for 12 years.
Before joining BCBSNC, Mr. Prather practiced in the Raleigh office of Hunton & Williams, with an emphasis on technology and transactions. Previously he was an executive with an Internet start-up, and a procurement specialist with the State of North Carolina's Department of Administration, positions that followed a nine-year sales management career in technology.
Mr. Prather earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of Virginia, and his J.D. from North Carolina Central School of Law. He is a member of the American Bar Association and the North Carolina Bar Association. He and his wife of 29 years, Pam, have three children who are all proud graduates of UNC Asheville.
