Blue Cross and Blue Shield Companies Contribute $363 million to Community Health Initiatives1
Did you know that 105 million Americans – 1 in 3 – rely on Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to provide access to safe, affordable quality health care?1
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association has released Investing in America's Health 2013 (pdf), a report that highlights some of the ways that the 37 Blue-affiliated companies have led or supported efforts in four main focus areas:
- Improving health care access
- Improving health care quality and affordability
- Enabling healthy living
- Supporting community and social causes
In the report, the BCBSNC Foundation was recognized for its partnership with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Piedmont Health to create the state's first "Teaching Health Center." The purpose of this center is to increase the number of residency graduates who begin their careers caring for the underserved populations of NC. Studies show that residents who train at community health centers are three times more likely to work in those settings after graduation. To date, 100% of the center's residency graduates have accepted positions in NC health centers.3
