Community
Employees Giving Back
We have a responsibility to the communities in which we work and live. This philosophy is reflected within our leadership and touches all sectors of our company. Through our comprehensive employee involvement initiatives, 80 percent of corporate officers participate in community outreach programs, and we foster and promote opportunities for all employees to actively participate in volunteerism, fundraising and other community-focused projects.
Since 1997, our employees have logged more than 263,000 volunteer hours, equating to nearly $4.5 million dollars in donated time. BCBSNC employees also help carry out our commitment to communities by: participating in regularly scheduled blood drives, organizing employee-led fundraising efforts to support local nonprofit groups, participating in hands-on volunteer projects, and by making donations to company-sponsored food and back-to-school drives.
In 2008, Our Employees:
- Volunteered more than 27,000 hours
- Donated more than 500 units of blood to the American Red Cross.
- Contributed 20,000 lbs of food to local food banks.
- Raised money to support the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the March of Dimes
- Contributed nearly 1,000 volunteer hours for a Habitat for Humanity build in Durham's Hope Crossing Neighborhood, an affordable "green" community.
- Combined with BCBSNC to donate $1 million to the United Way. BCBSNC and its employees have donated $7.5 million over the past 10 years.
